Handyman, repair, remodel or general contractor: which one do you need?

The four overlap, and the label matters less than the size of the job. What changes from one to the next is how much planning, how many trades and how much paperwork the work involves. Here is a quick way to sort it out.

When a handyman visit covers it

If the list is a handful of small items, each one an hour or two, start with handyman services. Think door adjustments, fixture swaps, caulk, drywall patches, a towel bar that keeps pulling out of the wall, or a punch list for a rental before the season starts.

When the problem is a repair

When something is failing rather than just worn, it is a home repair job. Rotted window trim, a shower bench with loose tile, a sagging deck board or water damage behind a wall all need the cause found and fixed, not just covered. If you want something built to fit a room, such as shelves, a mantel or a hidden door, look at custom carpentry and built-ins.

When you are changing a room

A remodel changes the layout, the surfaces or both. Most requests here are kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling and condo remodeling, where the building’s rules shape the schedule. A finished basement or a new deck adds usable space without a new foundation.

When the job needs a general contractor

Structural changes, home additions and whole-house projects bring in permits, inspections and several trades at once. That is general contractor work: one person planning the order of work, coordinating the trades and meeting the inspectors.

Common questions

Do you take small jobs, or only full remodels?
Small jobs are welcome. A sticking door, a drywall patch, a loose railing or a list of fixes before guests arrive is regular work here, right alongside kitchens, baths and additions.
Who does the plumbing and electrical work on a remodel?
Edgar brings in plumbers and electricians who hold a Colorado state license whenever a job calls for that work. He schedules them, and he keeps the rest of the project moving around their visits.
Can you run a project while I live out of state?
Yes. Plenty of valley homes belong to owners who are away for months at a time. Edgar sends photos as the job progresses and calls you before anything in the plan changes.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. Edgar looks at the job with you, talks through what you want, and writes up the scope and price before any work begins.
